The MS St. Louis

Forced to return to Europe, many of the St. Louis' passengers were accepted by various countries, including the UK, Belgium, the Netherlands and France; but more than 200 would die in Nazi concentration camps. In 1957, Gustav Schröder, Captain of the St. Louis, was awarded the Order of Merit by the Federal German Republic "for services to the people and the land in the rescue of refugees". In 1993, the state of Israel honoured him with the title of "Righteous Among the Nations". The story would be told in the 1974 book and 1976 film Voyage of the Damned.
